About us
Power supply
Maruia Springs is completely isolated from the outside world; there is no main-trunk power supply, telephone or mobile coverage, so it’s a place where you can truly get away from it all.
However all modern conveniences are available for guests, completely self-sufficient. There’s a satellite internet facility to provide contact with the outside world (if you really need it!). Electricity is generated on site using an environmentally-friendly hydro-electric system, powered by water piped down from a mountain stream, 1.2 kilometres away. The stream water is pushed at 320psi pressure, through a tiny hole, to produce approximately 160kW of electricity.
A diesel generator provides backup, should the hydro-electric system fail.
Powerful Healing Waters
Due to its high mineral content, the hot spring water at Maruia Springs has healing properties, and is considered particularly beneficial for detoxifying and softening skin. Those suffering from bronchial disorders, metallic poisoning, and skin complaints will also benefit.
Hot Spring Water Analysis:
Type of water – Sulphur (10 sen)
Mineral content – Over 1 milligram of sulphur per kilogram of water
History
Gold miners enjoyed these waters long before the Maruia Springs were opened as a commercial operation in the early 1900s. Back then, bathers accessed the springs on the far side of the river via a bridge, but that is now long gone, and today the thermal waters are pumped across to the hot pools at Maruia Springs.
