Scenic Drives

There are a number of good drives in the region. SH7 leads west through towering beech forest to Springs Junction where there is a garage, post office, telephone and tea rooms, and on through the Victoria Forest Park over the Rahu Saddle to Reefton. This historical town was one of the first towns in New Zealand to receive electricity and here the local Department of Conservation Office provides information on regional and West Coast activities.
SH65 at Springs Junction leads north to through the stunning Shenandoah valley and onto Maruia Falls, created by the Murchison earthquake in 1929. If you continue on this route you’ll wind up in Murchison, a lively place about an hour’s drive from Maruia Springs. The town offers a variety of activities including white water rafting, jet boating, kayaking, mountain biking, fly fishing, gold panning and cometing – an activity that is unique to this region! If you’re interested in earthquakes, The Murchison District Museum on Fairfax St provides detailed information and has many other interesting displays relating to local gold mining history.
One of the most rewarding road trips is the journey through Lewis Pass. It winds past sparkling rivers and ancient beech forests, through towering mountains frosted with snow, and vast, open plateaus surrounded by rugged peaks, seemingly draped in velvet, to the busy alpine village of Hanmer Springs. Here one can enjoy a variety of activities including bungy jumping, horse riding, jet boating and swimming in commercial pools at Hanmer Springs Thermal Reserve.
